The Tribune Tower, 435 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, a neo-Gothic building, is headquarters of the multimedia Tribune Company.
Designed by the winners of a Chicago Tribune contest, the design of this 1925 Gothic tower, influenced by cathedrals in France and Belgium, has all of the traditional elements of a skyscraper plus heritage expressed in flying buttresses, spires, grotesques, and more. The structure de-emphasizes horizontal lines and accentuates the vertical, creating the illusion that the building soars well above its 36 stories. Located on the Chicago River, it houses the Chicago Daily Tribune offices, in addition to great shops, fine food, and live sports radio (you can even join in!). The offices in the top of the tower are linked by secret passageways. The 24th-floor used to be the office of the Tribune's legendary former editor and publisher, Col. Robert R. McCormick. The office offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Chicago River and North Loop. Carved into the walls of the soaring entrance are famous quotations expressive of the ideals and obligations of the press. The centerpiece is a relief map of North America made of shredded dollar notes and plaster.
And the best part? The bases of the exterior walls have an intriguing collection of famous building fragments from around the world embedded in them - 120 stones from important locations all around the world, including the Arc de Triomphe, Alamo, the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Taj Majal, the former World Trade Center, the Parthenon, St. Peter's Basilica, Notre Dame, the White House, the Berlin Wall, the Great Pyramid of Cheops, Petrified Forest, the Hagia Sophia, Antarctica, Omaha Beach, Mammoth Cave and many more - one can spend hours exploring them all.
Several buildings around the world make reference to the design of the Tribune tower. Most notably in Australia, the spires of the Grace Building in Sydney and the Manchester Unity Building in Melbourne.
