Finding the (white) Balance

Most quality digital SLR's enable you to set a custom white balance for a particular lighting situation. Typically this involves shooting a properly exposed frame of a white card and there's also been advances in calibration filters such as ExpoImaging's Expodisc that mean white balancing is simpler than ever.

Using a custom white balance feature, you can set that image as a target point and your whites will be crisp and accurate. Even if there’s nothing white in the photo you’re taking, you will get true, rich colors by setting your color balance for your specific shooting conditions.

Since every camera has unique settings, it's always wise to check the manual before you shoot.

Appeals Court Confirms Photographer's Rights in Case

After a photo license expired, company continued to use images

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) announced that a recent Federal Appeals Court decision was favorable to photographers everywhere. The lawsuit, known as Jarvis v. K2 Inc., was filed by ASMP member Chase Jarvis and his attorneys, with pretrial assistance from ASMP. ASMP also filed an amicus curiae brief for the appeal, raising points of law that could not be argued during the trial. In its decision, the court held that an advertiser who licenses photos and uses them to create a collage must continue to honor all license restrictions that came with the original photos. In particular, if the license specified a limited time to use the images, the collage also cannot be used beyond that time.

Major Low-light Digital Photography Breakthrough Inbound from Korea

Researchers don't want you to worry about bright flashes in dimly-lit scenes anymore
Our eyes will possibly get some relief from the blinding flash of cameras in low-light scenarios. South Korea's Electronic Technology Institute announced the development of a new image sensor chip that allows digital cameras to capture vibrant images without a flash in dark spaces.

The digital camera equipped with the chip will be able to take high-resolution photos or video-recordings at 1 lux. The camera will be able to snap pictures in places such as theaters, underground traffic tunnels, or dark-lit bars and clubs. The chip promises clear pictures with light as bright as the lighting from a candle 1 meter away in a dark room and is said to be 2,000 times more light sensitive than other sensor types. The will initially be used for camera phones, CCTV cameras and vehicle rear-view cameras.

Institute officials stated that state-run Korea Electronics Technology Institute has developed the single carrier modulation photo detector (SMPD) chip using nanotechnology.The institute already spent roughly 11 billion won ($10.5 million USD) on the development of the SMPD chip over the past four years. The expected earnings from the chip exportation is about 2 trillion won ($2.2 billion USD) annually
No news has been released yet about the production details of the chip, nor has there been any pricing estimates on the chip.

Hallmark Institute of Photography Integrates Adobe's Lightroom into 10-Month Curriculum

Hallmark Institute of Photography adds Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to its intensive 10-month curriculum. Hallmark Institute of Photography faculty and students participated in beta testing of this premier software prior to its April 2007 release. Hallmark Institute of Photography instructors have been personally trained by Adobe's Senior Digital Imaging Evangelist, Julieanne Kost.

As stated by Adobe, its Photoshop Lightroom Software "is the professional photographer's essential toolbox, providing one easy application for managing, adjusting, and presenting large volumes of digital photographs so you can spend less time in front of the computer and more time behind the lens."
Since November, Adobe has been in communication with the faculty and students at Hallmark in refining the product prior to its release in April of 2007. Julieanne Kost, of Adobe, arrived at Hallmark during the week of the official release of the software to personally train our faculty in its use. In the weeks to come, it will become an important part of Hallmark's digital curriculum.

The Photo Imaging Council (PIC), is supporting a new Industry initiative

Sign of the Times
A Digital Memories Supplement will be published by MediaPlanet in The Times on the 22nd of May.
The 12 page supplement is printed with The Times, in compact form, and contains highly digital media specific and unbiased editorial on topics such as Cameras, Multimedia, Accessories, print products, alternative storage and lots of other hot topics.
The publication is entirely dedicated to the issue of developments and products in the digital photographic and camcorder fields. This is a comprehensive guide providing The Times readership with a valuable insight into the spectrum of activity from research and development to the latest product releases, and accessories.
The journalist producing the editorial for the supplement is Sean Hargrave, who used to be the Deputy Editor of Photo Answers as well as Camcorder User and has been published widely in the photography and video press, including Practical Photography, Amateur Photographer and What Video and What Camcorder. He has also written several photography books, and was the Innovations editor at the Sunday Times.
Gerry Dingley, PIC Chairman, has written a foreword for the supplement. All PIC members will be sent a copy once it is published. PIC’s policy has always been to remain generic in its product and corporate support and it approves wholeheartedly of the newspaper’s unbiased approach to the subject of consumer digital imaging promotion.

Shutterfly Offers In-Store Pickup at Target

While home delivery is convenient, it can also be a constraint when timeliness matters. Shutterfly's deal with Target will allow consumers to hold photos in under an hour.

Online photo service Shutterfly announced Monday that it would make the leap to retail stores via a partnership with Target stores. Using either company’s Web site, users will be able to upload, store and share photos just as they normally would with Shutterfly, but prints will be available for pickup at Target stores in as little as one hour.
The move will place Shutterfly in direct competition with pharmacies like CVS and Rite Aid, which have long leveraged their physical locations to offer in-store pickup of online orders. All three companies offer standard 4x6 prints for what seems to be the going rate of 19 cents.
"This partnership provides a first-of-its-kind retail channel for Shutterfly with one of the nation's leading consumer brands, and we are delighted to have found in Target the ideal business partner to give consumers the quality experience they expect from Shutterfly," said president and chief executive officer of Shutterfly, Jeffrey Housenbold, in a statement.
Oddly enough, the photo section of Target’s Web site still prompts users to log in with the soon-to-be-defunct Yahoo Photo. We can only speculate that Target made arrangements with Shutterfly following the announcement of Yahoo Photo’s closing on Friday, but didn’t quite have time to update their site.

Which Scanner Should I Buy?

Looking for a flatbed scanner that can handle not just film but the glories of prints and even paintings? Look no further.

If your idea of low-cost is under $200, start by looking at the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo ($190, street). It scans up to 8.5x11.7-inch originals at 4800-dpi resolution and 48 bits per color. You can scan larger prints and paintings by doing so in sections and then combining them later in an imaging program.
Plus, it has film holders for 35mm slides and negs, and 120/220 film. It also features Digital ICE for scratch removal and Epson's Easy Photo Fix for restoring faded color in prints and film.
However, many original paintings and drawings use colored dyes and pigments that exceed the color gamut of film prints and most lowcost flatbed scanners. To capture these colors with greater precision, we recommend the Hewlett-Packard Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner ($190, street). Its unique six-color scanning technology provides an expanded color gamut, 4800x9600-dpi resolution, and 96- bit color depth for extremely fine color gradation. It also handles up to 8.5x12.3-inch prints and flat art.
HP's built-in IR dust and scratch removal technology saves retouching time, and you can batch-scan up to 16 slides or 30 negs at the same time and save them to different files. Film holders are included for mediumand large-format (up to 4x5) film.
Supplied software lets you remove redeye from photos, restore faded colors, optimize exposure, and convert scanned images to a wide variety of file formats for editing or e-mailing.

Microsoft, SanDisk take smart USB drives back to school

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Microsoft and SanDisk are hitting the re-set button on the move to smart USB flash drives. The duo announced Friday (May 11) they will roll out next year new hardware and software to create drives that can securely carry and launch both data and applications, giving users a portable version of their desktop they can take plug in to any computer.

Demystifying D-SLR Sensor Cleaning

Will Amazon click with photography reviews?

Digital photographers on Monday were debating whether a retailer can also offer professional camera reviews without creating the perception that the opinions are biased.
The discussion was prompted by Amazon.com's announcement that it had acquired Digital Photography Review, a London-based Web site that specializes in reviews and news for shutterbugs on both sides of the Atlantic.
Amazon, of course, has for a long time posted user reviews to its site. But with its purchase of Dpreview.com, the e-tailer picks up a company that features professional reviewers who have amassed considerable credibility with a growing community of photography buffs.
Does the difference between reviews written by amateurs and those written by professionals matter? Amazon has never been seriously accused of gaming user-generated reviews and, though it hasn't disclosed the price of the acquisition, it would be hard to imagine the e-tailer would do anything to make Dpreview's 7 million monthly unique visitors question its integrity.
"One of the things we like about Dpreview is the fact it provides readers with unbiased, in-depth reviews," Patty Smith, an Amazon spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. "We don't want to change the features that Dpreview customers enjoy."
On the site's message board, shortly after announcing the sale, Dpreview's founder, Phil Askey, posted a note telling users that reviews won't be compromised by the new corporate ownership. "I'd like to reassure you that this is a good day for everyone," Askey wrote on the board. "Amazon will have no affect on the reviews we write or the products we choose to review."
Still, some in his audience remained skeptical. One person who posted a reply to Askey wrote: "The minute they decide they can make more/faster bucks by starting to tailor reviews, mix marketing/editorial content and edit out negative user feedback it will happen. It's up to Amazon to decide."

An Expose' on Google AdSense Fraud - Protect your PPC account

Google AdSense fraud is one of the diseases that plague the Ad Words advertisers.

Google AdSense and Title ="According to Google: Invalid clicks are generated by prohibited methods, such as repeated manual clicking or the use of robots. Invalid clicks are intended to artificially and/or maliciously drive up an advertiser's clicks and or a publisher's earnings. Copyright in photographs is the same as copyright in anything else which is a matter of human creativity.
In general, as soon as a photograph is taken, it is subject to the same rules restricting copying as a piece of writing or music or anything else, (with the exception of inventions falling within the law of patents, which are governed by a separate set of rules). There are, however some peculiarities relating to photographs.
