The weather on the Northern Coast of California is pretty eccentric. It could be a wild storm, balmy sunny day or a combination of both with some of that famous fog thrown in the mix as well. If you have never experienced a storm on the Pacific Coast, you are missing one of lifes great experiences. Imagine towering Redwoods and Fir trees bending in the wind, the look and sound of huge waves pounding the coasts and then ...
a rainbow.
Not just the weather is a real challenge for Point Arena Lighthouse but also its location. In April of 1906, the devastating Great Quake struck Point Arena's Lighthouse tower. The earthquake occurred along the San Andreas Fault, which parallels the coastline 3.5 miles from Point Arena. Shock waves raced across the landscape to the Light Station, damaging the lighthouse and keepers quarters beyond repair. The new current tower was a new concept in lighthouse construction. It was the first to use iron reinforcement rods in concrete. It began operation in September of 1908.
At 115 feet, Point Arena Light is the tallest in California. The smokestack-like silhouette (single diameter bottom to top) makes it unique. Climb the 145-step ascent of the spiral staircase to the tower top. You will be rewarded with unbroken panoramic views of California's Pacific coastline and its bucolic countryside.
