Built in the 1890's, the Colorado State Capitol building with its large pillars is composed of Colorado white granite. It is a key feature in the Denver skyline because of its bell-shaped dome, plated with 200 ounces of 24 karat gold. The gold plated dome commemorates Colorado's Gold Rush days and the early pioneers and miners who helped build this great state.
The inside of the capitol building is a cacophony of brilliant brass and stained glass, but the really priceless building material used inside is Colorado Rose onyx, commonly called Beulah Red Marble, a rare stone found near Beulah, Colo. The entire world's supply of Colorado Rose onyx went into the Capitol. It cannot be replaced - not at any price.
Denver, also called 'Mile High City', really is exactly one mile high. The exact elevation of 5,280 feet (1 mile) above sea level is maked by a round brass cap embedded in the western entrance stairs of the State Capitol.
The Colorado State Capitol Building in Denver is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the United States. If you get the chance, head up to the observation deck and enjoy a spectacular view of Denver and the Rocky Mountains in the distance. State law prohibits building any structure that would block the view of the Rockies from the State Capitol.

Headless Horseman
The legend of the Headless Horseman begins in Sleepy Hollow, a real community located near North Tarrytown, New York. The area is full of ghost stories including the one about the Headless Horseman, a dark and shadowy figure.
Its said that even in modern times the Headless Horseman rides, frightening motorists along Canton's rural roads causing fear-based heart attacks or a startled driver to veer into a ditch to avoid hitting the frantic phantom. Survivors say that the beams of their car's headlights shone right through horse and rider, making them almost invisible, until, suddenly, car and horseman seemed about to collide.

The Scream
Relief (from Italian, rilievare: to raise) is a sculptural technique. This technique is quite ancient, and it has been used independently in many cultures from Mesoamerica to India. It is believed to have pre-dated sculpture, as it is easier to create than a free-standing full-figure.
Contemporary neo-classical reliefs can be found on the façades and in interiors of numerous buildings in many nations of the world. Many are in classical Roman or Greek style while others reflect a more natural approach to form, even some in an unfinished style reminiscent of Michelangelo's later sculptures.
Many beautiful relief sculptures can be found on front façades on the most beautiful burgher houses in Munich, Germany.
The face in this photograph so sad - it hurts to look at it. It screams a sculpted language we can never hear ...

Hoover Dam Reservoir - Architecture on a grand scale
Hoover Dam, an engineering and architectural marvel, spans the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada, some 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas Nevada. The dam, a massive curved wall, is 726 feet high, 45 feet thick at the top and 660 feet at the bottom, and is larger than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. It was the tallest dam in the world when it was completet in 1935, and remained the largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world until 1948.
Named for Herbert Hoover, 31st president of the United States, Hoover Dam is filled with 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete, enough to pave a strip 16 feet wide and 8 inches thick from San Francisco to New York City. If the heat produced by the curing concrete could have been concentrated in a baking oven, it could have baked 500,000 loaves of bread per day for three years. The water on the lake side is more than 500 feet deep, and the lake holds a total of 10 trillion or so gallons of water - enough to cover a state like Connecticut 10 feet deep.
Today Hoover Dam is no longer the tallest, the largest by volume or the largest hydroelectric power producer, but remains among the biggest and best-known dams in the world. All its architecture is on a grand scale, and the design has beautiful Art Deco elements, unusual in an engineering project.
Water levels are low in reservoirs all over the parched American West, but in many areas, the amount of water being used is no greater than the amount that evaporates.

Bodie California - A Trip Back In Time
The road to Bodie, California, is right in the middle of nowhere, it's just you and the mountains surrounding you. It goes for about 9 miles on a very bumpy asphalt road, then you'll reach a sign warning you about very rough conditions for the next 3 miles. And at the end of this stretch you'll have to leave your car here and go on by foot for another 2 miles.
The walk, however, is very rewarding. After some hills the landscape opens and gives a spectacular view on the ghost town. It is amazing to see how many people once lived in the middle of nowhere, and what it was like to be in the wild west during America's gold rush time. At its peak, Bodie had a population of about 10,000 people. Even for someone who is not all that interested in American westerns, gold mining etc., it is a fancinating place with a lot of history.
Going to Bodie brings you back a hundred years. The town is in pretty good condition for the rough Sierra Nevada climate.

Chicago Theatre - A classic Chicago landmark
The Chicago Theatre at 175 North State Street in Chicago, IL, famous for its iconic, six story-high "C-H-I-C-A-G-O" sign and its 29-rank Wurlitzer theater pipe organ, opened its doors on October 26th, 1921 and was quickly dubbed the "Wonder Theatre of the World."
The 3,600 seat auditorium, that stands seven stories high and more than one half of a city block wide, hosts performances by world renown musicians, comedians, acrobats and theater groups. Not only is it a beautiful theater with some really ornate designs on the ceiling, ornate columns, a grand staircase and beautiful stained glass windows, but the sound quality is exceptionally balanced; no weird echos, no reflections, no mysterious buzzing. Just crisp, clean, loudness. And there isn't a 'bad seat' in the house.
Walking through the theater's doors makes one feel small but at the same time very special.

Wrigley Building Chicago Illinois
Chicago's iconic Wrigley Building, known for its soaring clock tower, sparkling white terra-cotta cladding, well-proportioned architecture and nighttime lighting, has been home to the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. for nearly a hundred years. It is one of the most famous Chicago landmarks, celebrated in numerous movies, on postcards and in songs like "My Kind of Town".
Built in the early 1920s by the founder of the famous Wrigley's chewing gum company, the gleaming structure, modeled after the Seville Cathedral’s Giralda Tower in Spain, is a graceful synthesis of diverse stylistic sources (Spanish, Renaissance, French and Chicago School). As "The Gateway to the Magnificent Mile," the building sits directly across from its famous counterpart, the Tribune Tower, just north of the Chicago River on Michigan Avenue.
This is Chicago's jewel, like a resplendent white diamond that appears as a vision when it's first in your sights - an unforgettable site — day and night — for Chicago residents and visitors. It takes your breath away.

Baby it's cold outside
The coldest winter in 30 years was recorded across many parts of the US during the 2010-2011 winter.
Eastern parts of the US plunged to a record -50F with the Northeast of the US also seeing records broken. Temperatures were also largely below normal averages for Chicago, New Orleans, and Minneapolis. Snowstorms shattered New York City in December 2010 and January 2011 to become the snowiest January ever recorded.
I can imagine that millions of people prayed for global warming as the cold spell held its tight grip on the Planet.

Mountain High - Salt Lake UT
Utah has some of the best snow on earth for skiing. That's why Salt Lake City was selected to host the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Seven canyons snake up into the mountains from the city's edges, which means 7 ski resorts are within a snowball's toss: Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, Park City, Deer Valley, and Wolf Mountain.
Alta definitely is The Best ski area and deserves the tremendous respect that it has garnered over the years. There's a definite magic about Alta. It has everything a skier could want.
Brighton is a hidden gem. It has a good mix of terrain with some nice black diamond runs, and also welcomes snowboarders.
Solitude offers many great trails, a fair amount of black diamond territory, and a long intermediate run which has some nice steep areas. Skiing it on a weekday means you'll never have a lift line wait.
Snowbird has lots of interesting terrain, especially for the more advanced skier.
Park City is huge. It's impossible to ski all of its excellent mix of terrain in one day.
Deer Valley is famous for its poshness and attracts people with far more money than skiing ability. However, when you're looking for interesting runs you possibly get bored quickly.
Wolf Mountain is a smaller resort with some very good runs and an interesting mix of terrain. Most of the runs are pretty challenging. Even easy and intermediate runs seem to be harder than similarly ranked slopes at neighboring resorts.
Utah has everything one could want in a ski vacation: Big mountains, gorgeous scenery and abundant dry powdery snow. Come along for a ride.

Rime covered fence
Soft rime is unbelievably beautiful and eerie, and it makes a simple walk a truly magical experience. It only happens once in a while when the conditions are perfect.
All the fences, trees and shrubs - even the weeds- coated with thick rime ice ... it looks so peaceful and makes a marvelous natural winter scene.

Window Candles Nostalgia
Christmas window candles are a traditional favorite in Christmas decorating.
Placing window candles started with the ancient Romans. During the period of winter solstice, they used to hold winter celebrations to praise the return of the sun. However, putting a candle in the window as a Christmas representation appears to be an Irish custom. Some say the candle in the window was meant as a message to the Biblical Mary and Joseph: there is room here for you and your coming child. Others say it held a similar meaning for weary travelers in general - an indication of the legendary Irish hospitality: come in and join us, there is room at our hearth for you this evening. And in the days when it was illegal to practice the Catholic faith because of Penal law, the candle in the window told traveling priests that this was a home where they were welcome and could offer the Irish Catholic Mass in safety. Irish tradition holds that after dinner on Christmas Eve, the youngest member of the household is given the honor of striking the ceremonial match and lighting the candle in the front window to bring luck to the home.
Although the custom continues, technology has changed the way it is practiced today. Now electric candle lights add a warm sparkling holiday glow and a serene, elegant look to any home. They are one of the hallmarks of the holiday season.

Santa is a gardener
Santa Claus hits crunch time soon, as he does every Christmas Eve. But I got to thinking. What's he do in the off-season? Then it occurred to me … I'll bet Santa is a gardener.
Can't you just picture good, ol' Santa in jeans, work boots and a red flannel shirt with red suspenders digging ‘Yukon Gold' potatoes for the evening stew? I can.
If Santa isn't a plantsman, why would he be honored with Santa Claus garden flags, Santa Claus garden stakes, Santa Claus garden figure lights, even a Santa Claus garden gnome made by some German company?
I'll bet Santa's doctor and Mrs. Claus have been on his case about losing some weight and lowering his cholesterol. What better way to do that than by simultaneously exercising and growing his own salads, cole crops (which also happen to be high in cancer-preventing antioxidants) and Alaska-hardy carrots, which are, as we all know, a reindeer favorite? And he surely has an ample supply of well rotted manure to work into the garden … probably a nutritious combo of reindeer and polar-bear doo-doo.
Hmmmm. Maybe it's not too late to revise my Christmas list to ask Santa to bring me one of those great big cabbages and a nice jar of North Pole kraut.

Old world Christmas
Many millennia ago, ancient man believed that by decorating the bushes in the winter time, they could make them attractive for the spirits, which they believed had fled for shelter from the harsh weather. Later, people began to take branches into their homes to give warmth and shelter to the spirits of nature, releasing them in the early spring when the first buds began to appear on the trees.
Modern Christmas 'looks' tend to come into fashion every so often, and last a few short years before swinging back to the nostalgia of the traditional decorations of old.

Handcrafted Mouth Blown Christmas Glass Balls
Germany and Austria have contributed many of the elements that we consider a "natural" part of the Christmas celebration. What would Christmas be without “Silent Night” (Austria) or the Christmas tree (Germany)? But there are other Christmas items we take for granted that have their origins in German Europe. The next time you decorate the Christmas tree (or take the decorations down!), take a closer look at the ornaments. Those shiny glass balls (Glaskugeln) and tinsel (Lametta) are German inventions.
In the late 16th century the small German town of Lauscha, then in the Duchy of Sachsen-Coburg, now in the German state of Thuringia (Thüringen), became known for its glass-blowing (Glasbläserei). In 1847 Hans Greiner (a descendent of the Hans Greiner who had established Lauscha's first glassworks in 1597) began producing glass ornaments (Glasschmuck) in the shape of fruits and nuts. These Glaskugeln were made in a unque mouth-blown process combined with molds (formgeblasener Christbaumschmuck). The inside of the ornament was made to look silvery, at first with mercury or lead, then later using a special compound of silver nitrate and sugar water. Greiner's sons and grandsons carried on the Christmas ornament tradition. They were also responsible for another product: glass marbles.
After World War II, East Germany turned most of Lauscha's glassworks into state-owned (VEB) concerns. After the Wall came down, most of the firms were reestablished as private companies. Today there are still about 20 small glass-blowing firms active in Lauscha.
