Buddha

Whether or not we follow the Buddhist religion, we are all familiar with the traditional image of the rotund, smiling Buddha.
In contrast to the laughing Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama Buddha (founder of the Buddhist religion) was tall and had an athletic build. The Historical Buddha (a real person who lived around 500 BC in India) is one of the most widely recognized in India, China, the rest of Asia and worldwide.
Buddha is not a personal name. It is an honorific term, like messiah or Christ (the anointed one). Another common term for Buddha is Tathagata. The Chinese name for Buddha is Foh. In Japan, Tathagata is rendered as "Nyorai," and an honorific title given to those who have attained enlightenment.
