The Bund - Shanghai's magnificent historic waterfront

By the late 1920s, the Bund, Shanghai, China had been transformed into the thriving Wall Street of Asia – at a time when the New York original was mired in crashing depression. Signifying Shanghai’s riches were three of the finest foreign-designed structures in the Far East: the art deco Sassoon House (opened in 1929 and home to the Cathay Hotel, now the Fairmont Peace Hotel); the domed neo-classical Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (1923); and the Custom House (1927), whose dominant clock-tower was modelled on London’s Big Ben.
The Bund is an engineering and architectural marvel designed to be adored. It will always remain Shanghai’s most potent landmark.
